Head Coaches


Robb Stephens, Boys Head Coach

Robb graduated from Mounds View High School, where he qualified in 1991 and 1992 for the Minnesota State Cross Country Meet. He competed in cross country and track and field at Bethel University in St. Paul and was an assistant women’s cross country and track and field coach at Bethel for two years.  As a Social Studies teacher with the Robbinsdale School District, Robb became the head track and field coach at Sandburg Middle School, followed by a position as the head boys cross country coach and assistant track coach at Robbinsdale Cooper for three years.  Robb became the Head Robbinsdale Armstrong Boys Cross Country Coach in 2002 and, in 2007, became responsible for both the boys and girls cross country teams at Armstrong, as well as becoming the head boys track and field coach in 2008.  Robb achieved USA Track and Field Level I certification in 2007, Level II certification in Endurance Events in 2009, and is a licensed Track and Field Official for the Minnesota State High School League. Robb has coached five individual state cross country meet qualifiers and three Section Champion teams in his years of coaching. He was voted 2006 Section 5AA Cross Country Coach of the Year by his colleagues. Currently Robb teaches World Geography, Economics, and Psychology at Armstrong High School, in addition to his coaching endeavors.

Paul Ellison, Throws

In ten years as a throws coach at Armstrong and Columbia Heights, Paul has coached over 100 throwers. In that time he has coached 14 state entrants five all state athletes and two state champions. Several of his athletes have gone on to compete in college. One placed second in the nation in discus and another was a big 12 champion in the shot put for Kansas University.  Many of his athletes have gone on to coach in high school and beyond. While Paul was never an actual competitive thrower he did play one on TV. Paul is currently working to complete his doctorate in clinical psychology and is a school psychologist.

Chris Milton, Pole Vault

Chris has coached 12 all state performances and 17 state qualifiers since he began coaching at Armstrong in 2002.  Most notably, he coached the 2005 and 2006 girls state AA pole vault champion to an all time state meet record of 12-9 and a personal best of 13-3. Chris also coached the 2008 state boys AA pole vault champion.  Chris graduated from the University of St. Thomas in 2001 with a BA in computer science. While at St. Thomas under the guidance of Kyle Cleven, Chris was a three time MIAC conference pole vault champion and placed second three times. Before St. Thomas, Chris attended Minneapolis Washburn HS where he qualified for the state meet twice and was all state his senior year. Chris has a lifetime personal best of 16-0 in 2004. He is also USATF Level 1 Certified. Chris is currently working as a Technical Analyst at Lighthouse1 in Minneapolis.

Scott Wieker, Boys Sprints

Scott has been coaching Track & Field in Robbinsdale School District for over 20 years. During that time he has had 24 event state qualifiers, 18 of which were all state performances. The highest state finishes were State Championship 4 X 200 meter relay in 2005, state runners-up 4 x 200 in 2001, and 4 x 400 in 2002.  Scott graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1980 with a BA in mathematics. At the U he competed in Cross Country and Track & Field for 4 years. He graduated from Armstrong High School in 1973.  While there he competed in 2 Cross Country state meets and 1 track state meet. Currently he is self employed as a painting contractor.
